Golden Girls Live! *Review*
It’s Christmas time in San Francisco and that can mean a lot of things. Downtown is always a shitshow full of tourists and screaming children. It’s fucking cold (kind of. California cold). Drunk people in Santa hats & suits everywhere. But one thing you can look forward to in SF around the holidays is a live stage production of The Golden Girls put on by a group of 4 of San Francisco’s most talented ladies. The stars of the show are Heklina as Dorothy, Cookie Dough as Sophia, Pollo Del Mar as Rose and Matthew Martin as Blanche. They’ve been doing the show for about 10 years now and while the venue may have changed from time to time, the show has remained a Christmas tradition for locals that cannot be missed.
This year was my 3rd in a row attending and each time I try to bring someone new with me who hasn’t seen the show before and they have yet to be un entertained, even if they didn’t really watch the TV show. The ladies typically switch up the sets, some of the costumes, the episodes and sometimes the guests stars change as well. In my opinion I think this was the best year yet and ticket sales don’t lie. As of last week the entire run, which ends this Sunday night, has completely SOLD OUT! With 12 shows, in a theatre that seats about 500, that’s no small feat. I’ve seen posts from kids in the area begging anybody for a lead on tickets to one of the shows. If you were lucky enough to snag a pair, you will not be disappointed.
This year the ladies debuted two new episodes. For those of you familiar with the show the first is titled ‘From Here to the Pharmacy’ in which a man from the Persian Gulf returns from the war in hopes of shacking up with Blanche after she promised him she’d e his one and only when he got home safe. Only problem is, she doesn’t remember who he is! Rose also helps Sophia write her will and it comes to light that Sofia has been hoarding 10’s of thousands of dollars in secret from her daughter! The second episode and one of my favorites from the television series (It was also Rue McClanahan’s favorite episode) ‘Journey to the Center of Attention’ and it takes place around the Rusty Anchor, a local bar where Blanche is quite popular. That is until one night Dorothy joins her and happens to sing a song that woos all the men away from her jealous roomie. Meanwhile Sophia wants to throw herself a wake while she is still alive so she can hear everyone say nice things about her, but Rose forgets to mention on the invites that Sophia isn’t actually dead!
If you are able to attend one of the shows make sure you stick around until the very end at which point you can take a photo with the cast and chat with the ladies! Here is my photo below. I know. I don’t smile. But that doesn’t mean I’m not having fun! I can’t wait to see what the ladies do next year!
